Maithon Hydel Power Station
2 x 20,000 kW + 1 x 23,000 kW, India
The Maithon Hydel Power Station is an underground power house located in the border of Dhanbad and West Burdaman districts of Jharkhand and West Bengal respectively. This hydro plant consists of 3 units which were originally commissioned from 1957 to 1958. All the units are Horizontal Francis machines. The plant is owned and operated by M/s. Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). This plant is located on the river Barakar. The unit generated from this plant is shared between the two states (of India) – Jharkhand and West Bengal. It has the biggest reservoir in DVC. It has been designed for flood control & generates 60,000 kW of electric power. It has its unique underground power station, the first of its kind in South Asia. Underground tunnel: Horse shoe shaped (Length – 700ft; Width – 14ft; Height – 13.5ft). The power station has a total generating capacity of 60 MW with three (3) units of 20 MW each.
