Contract for Sholayar was signed in July 2015. The contract required that a Model Acceptance Test as per IEC 60193 had to be carried out. Hydraulic design considering the existing water passage (spiral casing, stay vanes and draft tube) with new runner and distributor was carried out using CFD analysis. The new runner was based on state of the art X blade technology with better cavitation characteristics and higher efficiencies. The runner was designed to operate to maximum head range of 325m.
The model was designed and manufactured at FLOVEL´s design center and manufacturing facilities. The spiral casing and draft tube elbow were manufactured out of Aluminum blocks with high precision CNC milling. All components were finally inspected using modern CMM technology.
Entire model weighing 5,620 kg was air freighted to Vattenfall AB, R & D facilities in Älvkarleby, Sweden. The model assembly was completed in early November 2016. Internal testing results demonstrated higher efficiency levels than contractually guaranteed. The model was offered for witness to customer Kerala State Electricity Board Limited at the end of November 2016.
After witnessing the test the customer finally accepted the model test results and approved for further manufacturing of the prototype turbine.
